Take your chemical peels, facials and skin care products to the next level with NEW Microneedling, now available at Galen Laser Aesthetics. Microneedling, often referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a series of small surgical needles are used to punch holes into the top layers of the skin. These little microsopic wounds heal rapidly in the next 8-12 hours, and they stimulate a series of events that begin to occur in the skin. The skin is has a complex immune system that senses these little wounds, and it begins renewing itself through the healing mechanisms that our skin is naturally built to create. During the healing phase, new stem cells are created, and fibroblasts and other wound-repairing cells begin to form new collagen. The collagen building is called neocollagenesis. The wound-healing process also stimulates rapid growth of endothelial cells (the thin layer of cells which line capillaries and blood vessels). In turn, this creates new capillaries for better blood supply to the skin. This reaction is called angiogenesis.
What types skin care products should I use after microneedling?
Microneedling works extremely well with skin care ingredients like retinoids, growth factors and antioxidants. It allows the ingredients to penetrate much more deeply into the skin to facilitate the growth of the healthy new collagen and lighten stubborn pigmentation.
Is microneedling safe?
Microneedling is very safe. During the microneedling procedure, tissue damage is unlikely because the needles are very fine and thin. In fact, skin integrity actually remains intact even though the skin reacts as if it had been “injured” by getting slight redness. Micro-needling is great for all skin types (there is no heat involved, making it safer for dark skin), and it works well on all parts of the body.
What should I watch out for when considering microneedling?
A Google search reveals a darker side of needling: some spas and consumers have been purchasing reusable rollers containing microneedles from sites like eBay and Amazon and performing spa treatments in unsanitary conditions by reusing needles. This is unsafe and unhygienic, and we don’t recommend attempting it at home or going to a treatment center that reuses needles. We use disposable, one-time-use medical-needling devices that are performed in a hygienic medical setting, and our patients’ safety is always our No. 1 concern.
What does microneedling do for my skin?
In our office, we have seen microneedling improve the appearance of melasma, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, ice-pick scarring, chicken pox scarring, surgical scarring, large pores and stretch marks with most people seeing an improvement after just a few treatments. Optimally we recommend a series of 4-6 treatments for the most collagen-stimulating benefits.
Will the microneedling needles damage my skin?
During the microneedling procedure, tissue damage is unlikely because the needles are very fine and thin. The tiny wounds caused by the microneedles are repaired and close up within 3-4 hours. Most patients report that the next day their skin is totally back to normal, therefore making microneedling a no-downtime treatment.
How does Micro-needling compare to laser skin resurfacing?
Micro-Needling can be compared to non-ablative lasers. The needles do penetrate as deep as these lasers can go. However, because there is no heat or light involved, the results may be less dramatic.
How many treatments will I need?
For most patients, we recommend a series of 3 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Some skin conditions may require 5-6 sessions.
What can I expect during my treatment?
The process starts with applying a topical numbing cream at our office for half hour prior to the procedure. Treatment takes between 30 – 40 minutes.
What about after treatment?
Immediately after treatment, skin will be red similar to a sunburn. In the days that follow, patients will experience dry, tight, slight redness, maybe even a small amount of peeling. Within the course of a week, the skin will heal and continue to improve by filling in collagen over the next month or so.

Microneedling WOW factors:

  • Stimulate collagen production, which promotes rejuvenation
  • Induce skin tightening, improve wrinkles and fine lines
  • Improve acne scars and surgical scars
  • Increase absorption of active ingredients such as Platelet Rich Plasma or growth factors into the skin
While this treatment is great on its own, it’s most effective when combined with other anti-aging skin rejuvenation treatments to not only enhance your results, but make them long-lasting.
